Gentlemen, have owned a Huldra 8 for a number of years, over time I have replaced a number of caps and the output sound is great. The unit has never worked satisfactorily on FM while FM reception on other radios in the same location is reasonable. Originally when I started unit first time, when selecting FM a regular, repeating loud crack sound came through with the music. Selecting mono fixed the crack problem. I assumed the problem had something to do with the push button or stereo indicator light so I disconnected the blue and black cables coming from the Stereo decoder(to the push button assy) This fixed the cracking problem and the stereo indicator functioned when listening to tape or phono. The low volume output on FM remained and of course stereo detection no longer functions. As I do not use FM normally the issue ended up in the too hard basket. However I really like to get the system to work correctly so I am wondering if there is someone on the forum that could help me fault find the problem. I have the Huldra 8 wiring diagram and a copy of the service manual. Also have access to a basic Hantek scope (20mHz, 20mV) I use my laptop to generate audio frequency signals via the headphone outlet, and the scope reproduces these signals Ok ( at voltages in the 100 mV range)

AM reception OK with good volume at 25% volume, FM volume setting has to be increased to 60% to get some volume.

I have a basic understanding of the functionality of the components on the PCB no1 and the IF board no.2. In the service manual I have the diagram of how to remove the FM PCB. This diagram shows the various interconnections. I have hooked up the scope to the d contact on FM PB (no.10 in the wiring diagram) and to the connection on the AM/FM slider switch. Get 48.6V DC on both contacts. (flat trace) This while the radio is playing at 60% volume setting.

Before I remove the FM board I wonder if someone could recommend some other measuring points I could utilise to narrow down the faulty component(s) I would expect to pick up a 10.7 mHz /7-8mV coming to ECH81 but unsure where to connect the scope. Also I am not sure if it is OK to earth the scope probe on the radio chassis or should it be grounded on the PCB.

Hopefully there is an expert on the forum that can help me on my way. Greetings from New Zealand

Or just as a beautiful vintage radio.
I am just in the process of restoring two Huldra 7's. Soon also a Huldra 6.
Currently using one Huldra 7 as a 'normal' tube amp. With it's 2xEL84 output tubes I thought it can be used with modern sources as a hifi amplifier. It has two extra inputs and I run it with a DAC and a CD. I really like it's sound, it performs very well.
I wonder if anyone else out there is using 60'ies tube radio receivers like this, Tandberg or other brands.

This is probably the most wordy Tandberg manual. It is interesting though, because they describe the circuits in detail.

Clive, it is for you and your Huldra 8. What was your name here in the forum?

Maybe some nice volunteer could help me with a page or two?
There is a machine translation already, but it is messy, so we don't have to do it from scratch but we must go in read, think what it really means and correct it.

I just wrote this in the Norwegian group hifisentralen (translated from Swedish), but thought why not post it here as well. The topic was the Huldra 9 and if it is underrated? It is maybe one of the least talked about Tandberg models. Some don't like it's design, some love it. I wrote in defence of the Huldra 9 and I think it is a hidden gem among the more famous Tandberg models.
______________________________________________________________

I want to add a little about my Huldra 9. The question came up again in the NRHF Facebook group, when I said that Huldra 9 is the "forgotten jewel" and seems underrated. At first I think the design is incredibly nice. It's very vintage but almost feels a bit modern at the same time?
I use it mainly as an amplifier, not so much the radio. But the sound as an amplifier is really good! It sounds, in my opinion, not like the other models I have, perhaps because it is one of the oldest. But I think it has a different character - it is "gentle", natural, a sound that is not in-your-face. That makes it an excellent amplifier for vocal jazz, singer-song-writer, opera, acoustic music, etc. I almost always play it without the "Loudness / Bass" function, which I think is a bit too boomy.

My brother, who is a modern audiophile, was at my house listening to it. I did not think he would be particularly impressed, considering that he has an MBL amplifier for 8000 euro and such. But he sat on the floor in front of it, "nearfield listening" he said, and my Hifi System 15 and really listened, he said "here you have an amplifier you can really sit and just listen to". An incredibly good review I'd say. It's sound is effortless, harmonious, soulful, crisp and airy.

I think the speaker combination is very important for Huldra 9. Mine is picky on the choice of speakers. If they are too big, it won't show it's best character. I have Seas kit 60 and it works but these require a little more power. However, with Hifi System 15, it is a match made in heaven! Also good with other medium-sized closed boxes, such as TL-5010, TL-5020 or TL-3520. I have not tried to combine it with anything more modern. It would be interesting to try.

My Huldra 9 is totally overhauled. I bought it for 30 euro and renovated it myself as it was in poor condition, one channel completely dead, the other weak and distorted.
The restoration is documented on my page Tandbergista (I am only an amateur..). The disadvantage of it is that it's a bit cumbersome to troubleshoot, due to it's construction,I think, but nothing that can't be solved.
